A Clearer Future Awaits with Premium Lens Replacement Surgery
Congratulations on considering life-changing lens replacement surgery! This is one of the most effective and rewarding forms of vision correction available at the Sunshine Coast area offices of Dr. Rylan Hayes – The Vision Surgeon – in Maroochydore. You can have confidence that specialist cataract ophthalmologist, Dr. Rylan Hayes, has carefully chosen premium lens options and provides bespoke care tailored to your needs.
What is lens replacement surgery?
This treatment may be performed to correct vision in individuals with cataracts and in those without. Cataract surgery is a procedure that entails the removal of the eye’s cloudy natural lens, which is then replaced with a synthetic lens referred to as an intraocular lens (IOL). Refractive lens exchange (RLE) also involves replacing the natural lens with an IOL, but it is performed in individuals before cataracts become cloudy (and stops cataracts ever forming). Candidates for RLE may have age-related presbyopia or severe hyperopia (farsightedness). This treatment can potentially free them from the hassle and ongoing expense of reading glasses and contacts.

What IOL is best for me?
Dr. Hayes carefully chooses the most appropriate new lens for you based on factors such as your prescription, visual needs, and astigmatism. No artificial lens replacement can currently achieve vision like a 20 year olds lens with perfect clarity at all distances. There is a balance to navigate between range of vision and quality. Today’s options optimise vision across three main “zones”:
- Near – This vision is associated with close-up tasks and activities, such as reading and phone use. Usually around 40cm
- Intermediate – At this distance, we are talking about correcting vision to support tasks like working on a computer. Usually around 66cm.
- Distance – Here, we want to optimise vision for activities 3m and beyond, such as driving, TV watching, and outdoor activities.
Dr. Hayes highlights that there isn’t one definitive “best lens.” Instead, he needs to strike a balance between precision and range. Some lenses maximise sharpness at a single distance, whereas others offer a broader range with small trade-offs in both contrast and clarity. The most suitable option for you depends on factors such as your lifestyle and goals. For instance, some of our patients value independence from eyewear more, while others prioritise precision vision over freedom from glasses and contacts.

What types of IOLs do you offer?
We provide a comprehensive range of premium lens models and brands. These lenses are largely categorised as monofocal (precision), EDOF (extended depth of focus), and multifocal. Additionally toric versions of all area available to correct astigmatism. Monofocal are designed for precision at a single distance. They are best for patients who value precision over range and complete glasses independence.
EDOF and multifocal IOLs provide a greater range, with the former supporting intermediate to distance and the latter for all distances – near, intermediate, and distance. Both types of lenses can be suitable for patients with astigmatism, providing a high level of independence from glasses. Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lenses are considered “balanced” and are ideal for computer users and drivers. However, multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are an excellent option for individuals with active lifestyles who can tolerate slight reductions in clarity, possible halos and glare particularly from bright lights at nighttime, and contrast.
What can I expect from surgery?
While personal clinical circumstances vary, in general, treatment is performed with twilight sedation and local anaesthesia. Due to Dr. Hayes’ advanced training, experience, and planning (down to the micron), he will usually treat each eye in under 10 minutes. After a light snack and short rest, you go home the same day. Most of our patients are wowed by the dramatic improvement in their vision in just 24 to 48 hours after their operation.
